Lets try to understand the three words ‘fateel’, ‘qitmeer’ and ‘naqeer’ in the Quran. All three words indicate about dates.

1. QITMEER

“He causes the night to enter the day, and He causes the day to enter the night and has subjected the sun and the moon – each running [its course] for a specified term. That is Allah , your Lord; to Him belongs sovereignty. And those whom you invoke other than Him do not possess [as much as] the membrane of a date seed.” (Surah Fatir 35:13)

So the meaning of ‘qitmeer’ is the ‘membrane of a date seed’  which is very thin & almost like nothing. There is a proverb,

Meaning, I didn’t get anything out of him.

2. FATEEL
Allah (swt) uses this word twice in the Qur’an; in 4:49 and 17:79

[Mention, O Muhammad], the Day We will call forth every people with their record [of deeds]. Then whoever is given his record in his right hand – those will read their records, and injustice will not be done to them, [even] as much as a thread [inside the date seed]. (Surah Nisaa 4:49)

Fateel refers to the ‘thread inside the date seed’

3. NAQEER

This word is mentioned twice in Surah Nisaa.
It means the ‘speck on a date seed.’ It signifies a very small amount of something.

Or have they a share of dominion? Then [if that were so], they would not give the people [even as much as] the speck on a date seed. (Surah Nisaa 4:53)

And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer – those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged, [even as much as] the speck on a date seed. (Surah Nisaa 4:124)

Nahl 16:73-75

What does worshipping other than Allah compare to? Allah gives a metaphor in Surah Nahl, verses 73-75.

( 73 )   And they worship besides Allah that which does not possess for them [the power of] provision from the heavens and the earth at all, and [in fact], they are unable.

( 74 )  So do not assert similarities to Allah. Indeed, Allah knows and you do not know.

( 75 )   Allah presents an example: a slave [who is] owned and unable to do a thing and he to whom We have provided from it secretly and publicly. Can they be equal? Praise to Allah! But most of them do not know.

In these verses Allah compares worshipping dieties other than Him to asking a slave who doesn’t have anything for one’s needs. Their relevance today is not surprising considering how many people don’t understand that asking from someone who doesnt have anything of their own is useless.

Ibn Abi Najih reported that Mujahid said: “This is an example given of the idol and the True God – can they be the same” Once the difference between them is so clear and so obvious, no one can be unaware of it except the one who is foolish.
