The Arabic word for sincerity is ‘ikhlas’. Doesn’t that word strike a bell? Yes there is a surah in the Qur’an titled sincerity – it is also the mission statement of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh):

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ (1) اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ (2) لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ(3) وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ(4)

  1. Say, “He is Allah, [who is] One,
  2. Allah, the Eternal Refuge.
  3. He neither begets nor is born,
  4. Nor is there to Him any equivalent.”

So how does testifying that oneness of Allah bring about sincerity??

The answer to this is apparent in our everyday ibadah. Whenever we talk about sincerity we also talk about ash-Shirk al-Asghar – ar-Riyaa (showing off). And remembering the oneness of Allah and that we are doing all acts of worship for Him alone, purifies our intentions and makes us sincere.

Therefore it is evident that believing in the oneness of Allah will lead to performing ibadah with sincerity
